Dance Arts Program

printemail

The Dance Department at H.W. Blake High School of the Arts offers students the unique opportunity for rigorous training in dance, combined with a strong, comprehensive academic program.

The two genres of dance instructed are ballet and modern. The ballet program is based on the traditions of the Vaganova classical ballet technique. Emphasis is placed on advanced technique development, coordination, demi-pointe and pointe work, and artistry. In addition to the routine exercises (barre, center, jumps, and pointe work), students learn classical variations from the original works of Petipa, Bournonville, Fokine, Ivanov, Gorsky, and other masters of classical ballet choreography.

The modern program concentrates on universal modern dance elements at an advanced level. Emphasis is placed on energy contrasts, correct alignment, coordination, flexibility, and strength. Complex movement phrases with intricate rhythmic patterns, multi-level planes and spatial patterns are explored with the addition of performace quality and style. Students learn the basic principles of the codified modern techniques of Limon, Horton and Graham.

In addition to the two technique styles, students take classes in Dance History, Kinesiology, and Choreography, as well as have the chance to perform in any of the four dance showcases each year. Students who complete this program will gain an in-depth education in dance as an art form. They will also carry with them the necessary tools to prepare them for a future of success in any field they choose to pursue.
